Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family’s Right for Desegregation by Duncan Tonatiuh

Rating: ★★★★

Genre: Historical fiction, children’s lit

Medium: Hardcover

Synopsis: Sylvia Mendez doesn’t want to go to school.  She’s bullied by the other kids because she’s Mexican.  But her parents say that this is what they fought for–for her to have a better education, where all the white kids go.  This is their story.

Review:  Wow.  People who think historical fiction can only be 500-page long books need to read this.  Sylvia Mendez, an American civil rights Activist, played a major part in the Mendez v. Westminster case, one that redefined who was able to get a better education, when she was only eight years old.

With a unique art style that uses multiple types of media for its illustrations, Tonatiuh tells an enriching and informative story to others–one that should be learned about and remembered, especially in times like these.  As a historical story, it’s incredible and powerful.  As a picturebook, it is no less incredible and powerful–in fact, it’s even more impactful, now that the story’s audience has widened to include children.
