review 1: This book was jam-packed with back to back thrilling fights and break ins. Once again, Walden adds a new twist onto the story with good plot developments. I love how you get a perspective from characters besides Otto, like Dr. Nero. I do wish though, that some better scientific explanation be provided about Otto's unique ability because it seems highly improbable for a very technology based book. And I'm not quite sure what's happening with Franz and Nigel, are they main characters or not? And why are they always together, and then the four are always together, it's like they have no other friends which isn't really very realistic considering they're not introverts at all. There are some loose ends, but in the end it's the cool spy stuff that counts!
review 2:
... moreIt’s yr 3 for our favorite students of supervillainry, Otto and the gang of talented mischief-makers. In bk 1 they wanted nothing more than to escape the Higher Institute of Villainous Education. By now they’ve developed a kind of on-edge affectionate for the place and at least some of its dangerous inhabitants: Raven, the super-cool assassin bodyguard, H.I.V.E.mind, the computer with a personality, even Nero, the headmaster and one of the most senior members of the elite villain organization G.L.O.V.E.. Nero may be one of the deadliest people on the planet, but Otto and friends respect him for his one weakness – he cares for his students. So when NERO is captured from under Raven’s nose, Raven and our 4 favorite students set out to rescue him.Meanwhile, back inside H.I.V.E., our favorite comic relief, Nigel and Franz, aid the teachers in a conspiracy to overthrow the replacement headmaster. Who is…well, don’t want to give this twist away either. Someone deadly you don’t want handing out detention. In fact, Walden pulls off a few neat twists with the entrance of characters our protagonists never wanted to see again, or ones we heard of but didn’t believe the rumors. In a world of supervillains, you can’t guess who is on your side by who wears the white hats and black hats. Nearly everyone is suspect, and alliances switch quickly. This sense of unease—who do we trust—adds psychological suspense to an action-packed and even violent book. I found the book a little too violent for the intended audience. The back covers says it’s for ages 8-12. I would not recommend it for 8yos – too intense. The body count in this series just keeps rising, and our role models are sometimes the perpetrators in this underground world. On the plus side, Walden remembers to keep our 4 students together for much of the action. The charm of the first book was watching our young friends bounce off each other. The team that banters together and breaks into high-security fortresses together stays together.Walden saves his biggest twist for the last few chapters, and it’s a doozy. This is probably the coolest and most satisfying climax yet to a book in Walden’s series. I’d say more, but I don’t want to give it away. Suffice it to say Walden remembers to give more power back to his young protagonist, Otto. Bk 2 suffered from shifting the focus too much to the adults in the series. less
