Heart of the Rockies
review 1: I really enjoyed the romance in this book. It was sweet and tender against some pretty dire circumstances. I felt they connected despite immense differences in culture, upbringing, and religion. Even though I felt that connection between them, I'm glad the author didn't make it instantly all good and roses. Jesse and Shiloh differed in opinion on what it meant to be married, had differing views on how good and not so good relations were between the Indians and whites, and disagreed pretty strongly on what path the Ute's should travel on in the future to survive. Despite the differences, they are able to come together and create a pretty sweet romance. I also really enjoyed Shiloh's character. She's independent, courageous, and not afraid to get her hands dirty when other p... moreeople are in trouble. She stands up for her religion and beliefs against some pretty staggering characters and circumstances. Yet, in the end, she is still able to have a compassionate heart towards those who would have wronged her and want the best for everyone. She's also incredibly stubborn, pretty one-track minded when it comes to her religion, and uncompromising at times. It all rounds out to a woman who's real to me and who I could really connect with. I enjoyed this Christian romance novel immensely. The author was able to balance out the Christian elements with the romantic ones to create a sweet story that actually felt like a romance. The historical details of the Meeker Massacre proved a dramatic backdrop for our couple and their story; I enjoyed those details as they taught me some stuff too. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical Christian romance novels. You'll get a kick out of this one.
review 2: I liked this second book in the Heart of the Rockies series. It moved a little slower at times than the first book, but still had moments of suspense that kept you riveting on what would happen next.Shiloh accepts the job to go the colorado area and work at the White water indian agency to help the ute indian learn to read and write to prepare them to defend themselves and their ways from the white man that would take advantage of them. She is met by opposition: internally as she reunites with her childhood friend Jesse Blackwater and her unresolved feelings for him and also by the indians themselves in refusing her to teach their children. Tempers flare and Shiloh is in the middle when the Meeker Massacre happens. She along with the other woman are taken captive.Jesse is struggling with unresolved issues of his own. Anger and guilt about his part in his father's death. Anger at not being accepted by everyone because of his heritage. He fights against his growing feelings for shiloh because of the complications of where to live, how to live, and what to believe. There are not so many easy answers and some he isn't willing to compromise on. He saves Shiloh from becoming another indian's squa and takes her for his own, except she won't have it unless he marries her in the church and let her teach their children of God. he isn't willing to budge and so they part ways when the army comes to rescue the woman.Jesse struggles and finally comes to realize that he can't live without Shiloh and goes after her to convince her to be his wife and ask her wainwright brother's for permission. he is accepted into yet another family. less
