review 1: This really isn't my type of book, but I cannot say that I didn't like it, either. Actually, I was rather surprised that I liked it even though I did not really like the character of Anna. I think it is largely due to Jill Alexander Essbaum's exceptional writing. She is a top-notch writer and did an excellent job with this novel. I would not hesitate for one moment to read any of her other works and look forward to future releases from her. This novel was won from the Goodreads.com website in exchange for a review.
review 2: Very difficult book to review. The writing is gorgeous, and Anna Benz, the main character, is unlike any other fictional character I have ever encountered. The author did a remarkable psychological study of this character. I truly felt as
... morethough I was living inside Anna's head for most of the book. Anna, an American expat living in Switzerland, is married with children. She tries to be a 'good wife' but is bored, unhappy and feels isolated and lonely. She has several affairs as she spirals downward while trying to understand the meaning and value of her life..and I refuse to give anything else away. This book started off a little slow for me, but before long I could barely put it down. It is an amazingly well-written debut. less
