review 1: Honestly disappointing. I don't remember where I saw the ad for this book, but I preordered it a while ago. One day, it got added to my kindle library, and I finally decided to read it. I was so surprised when I opened it and saw the length of the book. I assumed, with it being priced at $2.99, that it was a full length novel. Not quite.I really only like novellas when they're an extension of a book or series that already exists. In most (if not all) cases, a novella is just too short to be able to develop characters and a proper story. This story was very choppy. It tried to follow the path of the present time - past - present timeline, but it sort of failed. I totally understand where the intention was leading the story to go, but it just wasn't pulled off well. Chloe an... mored Jackson are childhood friends from the time they're seven. They make a pact when they're thirteen that if they're both single by the time they're both thirty, they would marry each other. Something happens when they're in college (around the age of 20-21 because Chloe says it happens nine years ago, but she also says it was when she was a freshmen in college...so ok), and Jackson cannot forgive Chloe for whatever has happened. There was a huge jump between present time and flashbacks so that it started in present, went to when they were 7, then present, then 9, then present, then 13, then present (where Chloe basically begs Jackson for forgiveness and Jackson shuts her down), then all of a sudden the incident. And then the book ends on a cliffhanger, and we have to wait almost a whole month before we find out what happens next. I'm all for cliffhangers. But not on novellas that don't have good character development or good story progression. I obviously haven't read the second book yet, but I'm willing to bet that it could have been combined to make one decent length novel. Then, we might have some decent flow and things would actually make more sense. I have some major opinions about Chloe, the incident, Jackson's feelings on it and how I think everything should end. Ultimately, Chloe doesn't deserve Jackson's friendship, and if that had happened to me, I might have stayed around to find out why is all took place, and I might forgive, but I would definitely sever the friendship. While we don't really know how much Jax loved Chloe because he storyline is so poorly developed, I'm guessing that in that situation, I wouldn't be able to let things go either. Maybe the second book will shed some light onto what happens in the aftermath. The reason I rated this 2 stars instead of 1 star, ultimately, is because I plan on reading the second book. Yes, I'm a sucker like that. I know that it's probably a foregone conclusion, but I want to see how the rest of the story unfolds. I want to see what happens next.
review 2: Oh I so wish I hadn't bothered with this book. I don't like to give bad reviews, and I rarely end with such distaste for a book. But this one... well, I really liked the sound of it. It's very short as it turns out, and really just part one of a story, not complete in any way. I loved the idea of best friends, an issue, and reuniting. However, this book (which starts at 5% and finishes at 80%) fell completely flat. And then in to very disturbed nature. It's very rare that I finish a book, and honestly wish I could scrape it from my memory. But this is one such book. The bits of the past, when they were kids, was cute enough in a retelling a story way, rather than seeing it happen. But Chloe was unlikable from the start and when at the end, you finally are told why Jax hates her, well, let's just say I'm totally on his side!!! Except, with this kind of tale, you know it's all going to work out in end, and I can only gape open mouthed and wonder how. There is no explanation given for Chloe's behaviour and actions, and I have no desire to discover how the author intends to make this one work. The ending just grossed me out completely, and that's where it finished. Not worth the time and while I appreciate the author put work in to this, it is, 100%, not for me. If you like twisted relationships then give it a go. But if you don't, then avoid this one. Because twisted is putting it lightly. less
